Project Badminton for streetchildren in Gravatá/Pernambuco/Brazil
The objective of the project is to support poor children and adolescents through Badminton.
Presentation of the project: A very important aspect in human life ist hope, a perspective, something which can help you to see you through difficulties, like the lack of food or other basic needs, or even violence. This is our starting point for the children and adolescents, who live in a huge favela (slum quarter) in Gravatá. Unemployment, alcoholproblems and violence are common, the living situation is miserable with whole families living in a single room and open sewage all around where little children play.
Badminton, with all the aspects of the project represent hope and improvement of the quality of life. Practicing a sport without violence, an improved nutrition, improved clothing, compulsory schooling, even attention of the media, journeys, imporving self value feeling and much more besides, which one can read in the eyes of the involved ones.
These are some of the aspects that improve the quality of life of the children and adolescents and can be acheived with small means.
- How? By the assuming a sponsorship for one or more children. This contains the following achievements:
6 hours of Badminton per week;
- Nutrition;
- Clothing and equipment (racquets are sponsored by Wilson);
- Participation at two regional championships (Recife and Natal);
Location We are in Gravatá, in the northeast of Brazil, 80km landinward from Recife, in the State of Pernambuco. Gravatá has about 80,000 inhabitants, few industries and lives mainly from tourists coming from Recife, because of the cooler climate. Our project is at the outskirts of Gravatá, in a school beside a large favela.
School The school ODIP (Obra de Defesa da Infância Pobre - Institut for the protection of childhood in poverty - www.odip.org.br) is led by sisters of the Salesian order. It has at present about 400 children.
